C.E.R.T NWT is a multi faceted VOLUNTEER Emergency Response Organization. All members need to be able to operate in a safe, effective and competent manner to fulfill our Mission of providing “Operational and Logistical Support TO ALL Federal, Territorial, and Municipal, Emergency Services, Rescue Services, and Community Aid Services upon request"
Mandatory training:
C.E.R.T. Core Program: (approx 50 hrs)
Introduction to disaster management,
Incident command system
Fire extinguisher use
Use of the ATC 20-21 damage assessment forms.
Lifting heavy objects
Disaster first aid including triage
Basic Search and Rescue Techniques
Disaster Psychology and Critical Incident Stress
Search and Rescue Phase (Approx 70 training hours)
ERI Canada SAR Basics
Standard First Aid and CPR "C"
Spinal Immobilization
Basic Emergency Management (BEM) Take home computer course
Rope Rescue Awareness (Embankment operations)
Upon completion of the above training, members of C.E.R.T NWT. May respond to any local area events (local area defined as within 50 km of Yellowknife) under supervision of senior members of the team.
Other training:
Emergency Site Management (ESM)/ Emergency Operations Center (EOC): members of C.E.R.T NWT are rotated through the Emergency Preparedness College in Ottawa on a space available basis in order to undertake this training
Introduction to Disaster Social Services (DSS): (Red Cross )
Supervision in Disasters: Registrations and Inquiry Supervisor course run by the Red Cross
Search and Rescue Medic: 60 hour first responder program taught by Rescue Training Institute (RTI) Instructors
Survival Training, both winter and summer Operations
Radio, communications training.
